Mel Johnson Jr.
As an actor, Mel Johnson Jr. co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Total Recall. He was a regular on David Lynch's television show On the Air and has guest starred on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Practice. Recently Mel starred on Broadway as Mufasa in The Lion King. His other Broadway credits include On the Twentieth Century with Kevin Klein, Eubie! with Maurice and Gregory Hines, The Rink with Liza Minnelli and Chita Rivera, Big Deal directed by Bob Fosse and Jelly's Last Jam. Mel was the executive producer of Big City Pictures. His films Ragdoll, The Horrible Dr. Bones, Killjoy and The Vault are now out on video. He was also the artistic director of the award-winning arts organization The Imagination Workshop. Mel directed the triumphant world premiere of Tom Dugan's Robert E. Lee - Shades of Gray at the Carpenter Center for the Performing Arts in Richmond, Virginia. His Los Angeles directing credits include the award-winning Give 'Em Hell Harry, starring Jason Alexander, and the national tour of the critically acclaimed comedy Confessions of a Swordfish. Mel performs as Frederick Douglass in “In the Shadow of Slavery.” This one-man performance chronicles the life of Frederick Douglass, who has been called the father of the civil rights movement. From his childhood as a slave to his perilous escape to freedom, Douglass’s remarkable life is sure to educate and entertain.
